Nomine aka Outrage has 25 years of music industry experience as a DJ, Producer, Mastering Engineer, Tutor and Entrepreneur. The founder of Education & Bass who is VERY passionate about teaching delivers this 2 hour dive into the wonderful world of Mastering Audio.
In this course Nomine breaks down the fundamentals of Mastering using some amazing tools by Izotope (all of which can be used in any DAW or using other Mastering tools, BUT Izotope has some very powerful and unique things to offer). The course demystifies the dark art to arm you with the skills to Master your own/others music to an industry standard. It is highly recommended that you watch the whole course, rather than skipping through as there are some interesting findings, tips, tricks, secrets and mistakes (which we learn from) throughout, that could actually help change the game for you. Whether you are a beginner or have Mastering experience, this is definitely worth absorbing.
Nomine looks at what Mastering is from a variety of perspectives from those experienced in the industry. In lessons 3-8 a master is achieved by using the very powerful Master Assistant in Ozone 9 that automatically masters a song based on a reference track. The reference track is analysed and Ozone modules such as EQ, Dynamics/Compression, Dynamic EQ and a Maximizer are configured by means of artificial intelligence to get close to the dynamics, loudness and tone of our professionally reference track.
In lessons 9-10 a second master is achieved using Master Assistant alone with no reference track, just letting the artificial intelligence to do its thing, based on what it thinks is best for the source material to achieve an industry standard master. The results of both masters that use Master Assistant are very impressive; what does this mean for us humans, will the robots take over?… haha!
Lessons 12 and 13 are VERY important, as Nomine touches on something that was overlooked initially. True Peak limiting and Intersample Peaks are something we really need to know about, please make sure you do not miss these lessons.
In lessons 11,14 and 15 Nomine does a DIY master using the Izotope Ozone 9 tools based on what he believes is best for the track to achieve and industry standard master. Nomine shows us how he uses EQ, Parallel Compression, Dynamic EQ and more to achieve what was to be the decided final master. However, Nomine took careful note of what Master Assistant did in his analysis (lessons 17-18 for a deeper analysis) to inform decisions for his DIY master.
In conclusion Nomine highly rates the Izotope Mastering tools and the Mastering Assistant as a great way to learn Mastering and as a good starting point, even for a well seasoned Mastering Engineer. The innovative and unique Mastering tools by Izotope are very powerful and fast becoming and industry standard. A combination of AI Mastering and the human touch really can be powerful.
