House music producer T Williams joined us to deliver a track walkthrough masterclass. T Williams is a very well renowned DJ and Music Producer who has held a residency on BBC Radio 1, created official remixes for the likes of Disclosure, Wretch 32, Charlie XCX, released on labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Madhouse Records, Food Music, Conch and runs his own record label Today, Tomorrow Records. His style is a mix of groovy house music and some heavier bass driven house tracks and during this track walkthrough masterclass he takes us through his release ‘Be Alone’ that came out on his Today, Tomorrow Records label.
During the masterclass he takes us through his workflow techniques when creating a track, starting with how he lays down the drums and bassline, building into his lead sounds and breakdowns, adding in vocals and then sprinkling on effects at the end to create a dance floor ready track. He goes into detail on how he selects his sounds for each project, how to keep the track simple but achieve a full sounding piece of music, where he took inspiration from with the choice of vocal sample and why he uses effects to glue his transitions together. He explains the concept behind this production and why placing certain limitations or restrictions on the production process can really focus you and help you achieve what you set out to achieve without getting too distracted or lost in the process.
The second half of the masterclass goes into more detail about separating the creating side of making music from the more technical mixing/mastering side of finishing music off, he explains the importance of why he approaches creating music this way and why he finds separating the two different processes so important. He discussed things like taking the time to listen to your project on a number of different systems and critically analyse the track in its raw form off the back of the creative process before making mixing/mastering decisions in the final process and offers advice on different places to test your music to get a clear and accurate picture of the overall track.
