Destructive Processing

In this 3 part course, Occult takes a look at destructive processing. This technique is used knowingly and unknowingly by every audio engineer on the planet. In essence, it is a form of audio editing. What we need to bear in mind is that this form of audio editing is only destructive if the fx or processing applied is printed to the audio file permanently. If the file has effects placed over it but can be turned off and removed at any time bringing the sound back to its original state, this will be classed as non-destructive processing. Below is a breakdown of what each lesson within this course covers.

Part 1 – Chords: Occult begins this part by explaining in his own words what destructive processing means to him. He records in a chord and then resamples it into a sampler. He then begins to process the chords by eq’ing them, pitching them down, filtering, distorting and compressing.

Part 2 – Drums: In part 2, Occult uses his own drum samples within the Ableton drum rack. He begins by quickly selecting some drum samples and then processes them by filtering, distorting, eq’ing amongst other effects. He also reveals a great trick to humanise your drums within you midi clip.

Part 3 – Bass & Mixdown: In this final part, Occult uses a Guitar sample for the bass in his track. He begins with some additive and subtractive eq to sculpt the low end. He then proceeds to duplicate the Guitar bass for a mid-range layer and then finishes by mixing down the boiling pot that he has created in this course.
