A.N.D. is the first single from Mouse’s debut EP ‘Angels Never Die’ and here she is to walk us through it. Written at a time of sadness, the song is lyrically about total personal confidence and the production is just as rousing. Released via Leisure Records, the EP’s production received praise from The Line of Best Fit, BBC Introducing, Tap The Feed and more. Musically, A.N.D. combines inspiration from all corners of Mouse’s mind from pop to metal to classical.
The walkthrough begins with Mouse breaking down her approach to translating lyrical concepts into musical ideas and explaining why sometimes starting with the largest part of the song can simplify structuring the rest. Part 2 is where Mouse deconstructs the synths used and metallic sound design, contrasting the warmth of the orchestra which is first heard in part 3. Then, she’ll explain how she gets her free orchestral VSTs to sound almost as good as the real deal.
Think you can’t combine brass, strings and a choir with a bouncing pop beat? Think again! The self-proclaimed ‘fun-size pop angel and producer princess’ takes us through exactly how it’s done in part 4.
In part 5, Mouse develops earlier themes in the second verse by adding extra textures. Keeping listeners engaged while maintaining a consistent sound palette is key. In the same section, she deconstructs the middle eight and the outro of the track.
Part 6 is where we first hear the vocals. Mouse discusses how they’re layered and touches on basic vocal processing.
